Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Users who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
