At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
